There was once a town where everything was two dimensional: the buildings, the trees, the vehicles on the road; and the people trudging down the road were two dimensional too. Drably dressed, with neutral expressions, they plodded in a never-ending stream to and fro on each grey, overcast, two-dimensional day.
But on this particular morning, with a two-dimensional watery sun trying to shine through the listless grey clouds, a stranger appeared. A three-dimensional stranger, with a bright smile and a cheerful step, striding confidently down the street. As he passed each person he smiled and nodded at them, looking full in their face. Periodically one of the trudging masses would catch his gaze and tentatively hold out a hand towards him. Unfailingly, he would clasp their hand, nod and smile into their eyes. As he let go of their clasped hand and continued on his way down the street, each person he had encountered would stare in surprise: for now, their own hand was three dimensional.
For many, they would furrow their brow, or curl up their lip in a sneer, and their hand would gently deflate back to its two-dimensional state. But for some, a half smile would appear on their face, they would waggle their unaccustomed plump fingers and almost imperceptibly the extra dimension would start creeping up their arm.
